Koh Rong Samleom

We have now made our way to Vietnam, but this post shows our previous week in Cambodia on Koh Rong Samleom.  We called it our holiday from our holidays.  Honestly, there isn't a whole lot to share about the week, other than show its beauty.  We did a lot of lounging, reading, playing cards, and wandering down the beach.  We also spent a day over on Koh Rong to visit our friends that we met in Laos -- Dave and Eddie.  That was a super fun day.

We are down to the last couple of weeks of our trip.  In some ways it has flown by, but when I look back at some of our pictures from the start, it seems like Australia was so long ago...  Maeve is pretty ready to head back home and see her friends again.  She keeps talking about all the things she's excited to eat when we get back home too.  Ha.  Part of the issue is that we've reached a bit of restaurant fatigue.  You should've seen us yesterday -- we found a bonafide supermarket here in Hanoi and were so excited.  We're staying in a cute little Airbnb and therefore able to buy a few items.  I had the best bowl of corn flakes ever this morning :-).  I think being in Hanoi is helping the restaurant fatigue too, as its much bigger and has different ethnic food offerings than we've seen in a while.

So, we're getting out there and still enjoying every day.  This kind of trip is a once in a lifetime experience, and I want to ensure we're not taking this for granted.  I'm reminding Maeve that we need to enjoy every day of this experience, as its really a once in a lifetime type of thing (unless I win the lottery...).  It is also not lost on me that I'm managing to spend some real quality time with Maeve, aka the tween drama queen, that I know I'll never regret.  Obviously there are moments here and there, but I've got to say... its been going really well overall.  Yay us.

Anyway, here are the photos from last week below...

Chaotic ferry terminal.  I wish I had taken a picture of Maeve waiting at one of the tables with our bags when I ran off to find us a drink while we were waiting -- while I was gone a whole slew of other travelers took over the table except for her chair, and I arrived to a kid with a scowl on her face while I laughed at the scene.  Ha ha.

Getting on and off the boats is always entertaining as I think I'm amazed that no one missteps, but I don't want to miss it in case they do ;-).

Homemade bread rolls purchased right before departure.  So good.

Earning our holiday by walking down the beach to our place in the midday sun...

...to which we were greeted with this welcome drink.  I think I inhaled mine in 10 seconds.  Well timed drink.

Maeve was sweating up a storm...

But, this was what we were treated with for 5 nights.

Our place, complete with a round bed.  But, no bug bites on Maeve this week.

The water was so warm and shallow.

That time when you have your camera ready as your graceful child tries to get out of the hammock just hoping you'll catch the moment she bites it.  Sadly, that moment never came.  I am a horrible person...  Ha.

Writing her letter to her class.  Its too bad she has such horrible conditions to write in.

Swinging at dusk

Maeve discovered she loves caramel shakes

There were fire dancers every night on the beach.

We took a night boat trip to see the bioluminescent plankton -- it was really cool.  The fact that we were essentially on a frat party boat... well, it was a bit of an education for Maeve.  Oops.  So much for family friendly that night.

On our last day we took a boat over to the neighboring island of Koh Rong to visit Eddie and Dave.  Both Maeve and I were super excited to see our new friends again.  They are so good with Maeve.

As you can see, she hates the attention they give her :-).

Koh Rong has a wave beach, so that was super fun to play in for the day.

Maeve and Dave played in the waves practically the whole time.  Eddie and I were happy that they had each other and lounged half the time.  Ha.

A little peak at Koh Rong - it has a bit more going on, and generally known as the party island.

"Eyes up" is a phrase I use with Maeve a lot on this trip to make sure she knows where she is stepping... this dock is a prime example.  Ha.

This scene made me laugh.  This little boy and his family were traveling with his new bike, and a live chicken in the yellow box -- clucking away every now and then.

A true backpacker now... sitting on her pack waiting on the ferry.

After our island time, we spend one night in Sihanoukville, just to ensure we were on the mainland to catch our flight to Hanoi the next day.  Sihanoukville is not our city, which I gathered from the reviews.  That's okay... we don't have to love every little thing and can have transit nights hiding out in our room and poolside.

Now we're in Hanoi and I do love this city.  We're here 4 nights before we take off for a trip to Bai Tu Long Bay and Ninh Binh.

Will update next week sometime with some Vietnam fun :-).
